When we are asked to do interior design jobs, inevitably it is always the family room that has to be done first. This is, after all, the most used room in the home beside the kitchen.  

 

Here are a few tips on how to do it right:

 

• Use every nook and cranny that you can. This means putting a nice, comfortable chair for reading in the corner. Use built-in bookshelves and entertainment centers whenever possible. They are better looking, provide great storage and take less room.
 
 
• Buy the sofa or sectional first. It is the anchor piece for the family room and you can choose other furnishings around it.
  
  
• You'll watch a lot of TV in this room, even if you don't want admit it. Forget the rule about keeping your TV hidden. There are many good looking TV nowadays, especially the flat screen ones. Choose a strategic spot for it where everyone can see the TV comfortably.
  
  
• Use durable and washable upholstery fabric. Cotton and chenille wool are good choices.
  
  
• Recessed ceiling lights are usually not great for reading. We prefer using table lamps and floor lamps strategically.
  
  
• Think comfort and function in this room. If you need a lot of seating, use ottomans or benches that can be moved around.
