Gatto Lamp
The Gatto Table Lamps (1962), designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, were inspired by George Nelson's experiments with metal frame lamp structures. To create the luminous structure, the brothers created a shape out of powder-coated steel that was sprayed with a "cocoon" of plastic polymers and protected with a clear finish. The coating acts as a diffuser, resulting in a sculptural table lamp that delivers a warm, soft glow. Achille Castiglioni often referred to what he called the "principal design component," which could mean a new technology or even a new behavior. The next step was to build upon the component, and this was an area where the Castiglioni brothers truly excelled. Through rigorous examination of materials and production techniques, they created work like the Gatto Lamps. Available in two sizes, the Gatto Table Lamps are scaled to work together. Placed side by side, the convex curve of the small lamp follows the concave curve in the middle of the large lamp. Bulb: Incandescent 60W/120V/A19.
